Tjis gun is pictured in Historic Pistols, and is a well known gun. .58 Cal, 8 3/8" round barrel. Lock plate is marked"FRENCE" ahead of cock and "CANTON" IN VERTICAL ARCH TO REAR OF COCK. It is not marked US and never was fitted for a belt hook. The side plate is marked "CANTON" OVER "FRENCH" and "MS" indicating Commonwealth of Massachusetts ownership. It was made for some State Militia contract. Provenance C.E. DuPont, Charles Ratcliff and Joe Murphy collections. To get a gun pictured in Historic Pistols for this price is a very good deal.
